OCTOBER 2, 2019

In 2020, New Hampshire will celebrate the one hundredth anniversary year of the First-in-the- Nation Presidential Primary.

The filing period for the 2020 presidential primary will begin Wednesday, October 30, 2019 and will continue until Friday, November 15, 2019.  The Secretary of State’s Office will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on all days (except Monday, November 11th – Veteran’s Day).  The office will be open until 5:00 p.m. on the last day of filing to receive declarations of candidacy which are required to be submitted in person by the candidate.

We are now heading on the path to setting the official date of the primary.   State law written by former Portsmouth representative Jim Splaine requires the primary to be 7 or more days ahead of any other similar election.  Since that law, the primary date typically has been set late in the year before the presidential election.

As of October 1, 2019, the number of registered voters in the state are:

Undeclared – 410,314

Republican – 291,991

Democratic – 276,259

TOTAL         978,564
